Annecy, France, often called the “Pearl of the French Alps,” is a picturesque town located in the southeastern part of the country, in the Haute-Savoie region. Known for its stunning natural beauty, Annecy is nestled between the pristine waters of Lake Annecy and the surrounding snow-capped Alps, making it a popular destination for both outdoor enthusiasts and history lovers. Here are some highlights about Annecy:
Annecy’s Old Town is a charming medieval district with winding cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and flower-adorned canals. Known as the “Venice of the Alps” because of its canals that branch off from the Thiou River, the Old Town is lined with quaint shops, restaurants, and cafes. Some of the must-see historical landmarks include:
- Palais de l’Isle: This 12th-century fortress, set in the middle of a canal, is one of the most photographed sites in Annecy and now houses a local history museum.
- Château d’Annecy: Overlooking the town, this restored castle dates back to the 13th century and was once the residence of the Counts of Geneva. Today, it functions as a museum showcasing regional artifacts and artwork.

Lake Annecy is the focal point of the town, often considered one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. The turquoise waters of the lake are perfect for swimming, boating, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The lake is surrounded by beaches, promenades, and cycling paths, making it a popular spot for recreation year-round.
Annecy has a rich history dating back to Roman times and was once an important center for the Counts of Geneva. In the 16th century, the town became a refuge for Catholic scholars during the Protestant Reformation and was dubbed the “Rome of the Alps.” This religious influence is still evident today in its many churches and cathedrals, including the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. Annecy is located just 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) from Geneva, Switzerland, making it an easily accessible destination for international travelers. Many people choose to visit Annecy as a day trip from Geneva or as part of a larger tour of the French Alps.
Outdoor Activities
Due to its location in the French Alps, Annecy is a haven for outdoor activities. In addition to water sports on the lake, hiking and cycling are popular, with numerous trails that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The Semnoz and La Tournette mountains are particularly well-known for hiking.
In the winter, Annecy is a gateway to nearby ski resorts such as La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand, making it a perfect destination for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.
Cultural Events
Annecy is home to several renowned cultural events throughout the year. The Annecy International Animated Film Festival is one of the most prestigious animation festivals in the world, attracting filmmakers and fans from all over the globe. The town also hosts the Fête du Lac, a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Annecy that takes place every August.
