There comes a time in many women’s lives when they begin asking questions that don’t always have simple answers. Why am I so tired? Why can’t I sleep? Why has my energy disappeared? Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?

In Are You Hormone Curious?, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Carolyn Zaumeyer, MSN, APRN, invites readers to explore the science behind hormones and their profound impact on physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Written in an approachable, easy-to-understand style, the book helps demystify hormone health while encouraging readers to become informed advocates for themselves. Interview with Carolyn Zaumeyer

Q: What inspired you to write Are You Hormone Curious?

Carolyn: Throughout my years in healthcare, I’ve met countless women—and men—who believed feeling exhausted, foggy, irritable, or simply “off” was just part of getting older. I wanted to write a book that helps people understand that while aging is inevitable, suffering unnecessarily may not be. Education is empowering, and curiosity is often the first step toward better health.

Q: Who is this book written for?

Carolyn: Anyone who has ever wondered whether hormones may be affecting their quality of life. While many people associate hormone health only with menopause, hormones influence every stage of life for both women and men. Whether someone is experiencing symptoms themselves or wants to better understand a spouse, family member, or friend, I believe this book offers valuable insights.

Q: What are some of the signs that hormone imbalance may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider?

Carolyn: Symptoms can vary widely, but common concerns include persistent fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, weight changes, mood fluctuations, hot flashes, declining libido, difficulty concentrating, and reduced energy. These symptoms can have many causes, which is why it’s important to seek professional medical guidance rather than self-diagnose.

Q: One topic readers are curious about is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). What do you hope they learn?

Carolyn: I hope readers gain a better understanding of what BHRT is—and what it isn’t. There’s a great deal of information available, some of it conflicting. My goal is to present evidence-based information that helps readers ask informed questions and work collaboratively with qualified healthcare professionals to determine what is appropriate for their individual circumstances.

Q: Beyond hormone therapy, what role do lifestyle choices play in hormone health?

Carolyn: Lifestyle is incredibly important. Nutrition, exercise, stress management, quality sleep, and overall wellness all influence hormone function. While hormones are one piece of the puzzle, lasting health is usually achieved through a comprehensive approach that addresses the whole person.

Q: If readers remember just one message after finishing your book, what do you hope it is?

Carolyn: That they deserve to feel their best and that knowledge is empowering. Don’t accept feeling unwell simply because someone tells you it’s “normal.” Ask questions. Learn. Advocate for yourself. The more informed you become, the better equipped you’ll be to make decisions that support your long-term health and well-being.
