Carpentras Strawberries

Towns and Villages in Provence all have their own special charm. Many have rich papal history, Roman history and ruins, dramatic history from different civilizations, cliffside ruins, and delightful markets. You will even find those with the distinction of being one of France’s most beautiful towns.
We had read about the ‘famous’ Carpentras strawberries. Not knowing how these could be so special as to have their own trademark, we wanted to taste for ourselves.
Grown by over 300 local farmers in the Carpentras region, these are a significant part of France’s early strawberries. The Carpentras strawberry is highly prized. This fragrant berry is grown in the Contat Venaissin plain near Carpentras. Cultivated since the late 19th century, this strawberry is a registered trademark with strict quality standards and is known for its early arrival, deep color, and exceptional aromatic flavor. To be officially sold un the regional label, growers must adhere to specific cultivation, irrigation, and hand-picking practices.
There are several distinct varieties, primarily the elongated fragrant Gariguette, the sweet top-of-the range Ciflorette, and the juicy, heart-shaped Clery or Pajaro.
With the sunny, dry climate in Provence, the harvest starts early. From February to July these berries are highly sought after. Mid-April is the Strawberry Festival.
